Benefits of Being a Member of the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers

The Only Engineering Society that Represents Individual Professional Engineers From ALL Disciplines

Continuing Professional Competency is Mandatory in Missouri:  Get your 15 Professional Development Hours (PDH’s) annually at a relatively low cost through your local Chapter and State MSPE meetings.

Representation Before the State Legislature:  Through direct contact with legislators by our Executive Director and registered lobbyist, Bruce Wylie, our contract lobbyist/legislative consultants, Herzog & Rhoads, and individual members we strive to represent and protect the engineering profession (your livelihood as an engineer).  MSPE makes sure all understand that Professional Engineers are uniquely qualified to practice through education, exam, and experience to protect the public’s health, safety and welfare.  Also, MSPE is the only official professional engineering contact between the State Government and the Board of Registration (by law the Governor is required to solicit 5 nominees from MSPE for Engineers to sit on the Board of Registration).  MSPE speaks for ALL engineers in Missouri.  Your membership increases our voice in the Legislature.  During this past year we worked on supporting legislation in the following areas:

  • Civil Penalties – Monetary fines for those practicing engineering without a license.
  • Tort Reform – Reduce design professionals’ liability exposure.
  • PE License Plate – While recognizing MSPE members, this will raise money for the Educational Foundation

5 organizations in 1: Your membership includes all five communities of the organization: National, State, Chapter, Practice Divisions, Cyberspace.

Ethics: The Society developed and adheres to a strong Engineer's Code of Ethics. The Society promotes the standards of professionalism that will set you apart from the crowd.

Develop Your Professional Skills and Enhance Your Career:

  • Develop your leadership skills through participation on MSPE task forces, Chapter and Practice Division leadership boards and the Board of Directors.
  • Connect with engineers from all disciplines, all areas of the state and all levels of employment and experience to create a unique peer network and provide you with access to potential business partners, employers and employees.
  • Meet professional colleagues in casual social settings, task force meetings, chapter events and MSPE-sponsored educational programs to talk business, expand on each other’s ideas or cultivate friendships.

Information:  MSPE works hard to keep you up-to-date with issues that affect Engineers with our publications The Missouri Engineer (MSPE’s bi-monthly newspaper that comes right to you with updates on licensure and legislative issues, continuing education opportunities from many sources and news of interest to the engineering industry), and the MSPE website www.mspe.org.  When the Legislature is in session, the “MSPE Legislative News” is sent to all members electronically on a weekly basis summarizing the status of key bills and events affecting the Engineering profession.

Gives You Opportunities to Give Back to Your Profession:

  • Help protect the engineering profession by joining your colleagues and voice your opinion before the Missouri legislature and Congress on important issues affecting what you do.
  • Support young outstanding math students in Missouri by volunteering for the state or chapter MATHCOUNTS program.

NSPE maintains the most complete inventory of all state licensure laws and procedures. NSPE provides guidance to states on how to deal with the unlicensed practice of engineering.

    • Finally NSPE is a unifying force on the national basis for licensed engineers so that PE interests in the United States can be more effectively represented than would be possible through 53 separate state and territorial organizations.
