NSPE President Makes 46th Consecutive Visit to Western Chapter
On September 17, Sam Grossman, P.E., conducted the 46th consecutive annual visit by the NSPE President to MSPE's Western Chapter, hosted this year by Joe Marsh, P.E., Chapter President. The annual visit started off with breakfast for past chapter and state officers of Western Chapter and the Kansas society's Eastern Chapter plus special guests UMKC Chancellor Leo Morton and UMKC School of Computing and Engineering Dean Kevin Truman at Jardine's, which opens in the morning only once a year just for this event! The day also marked the 7th consecutive year the NSPE President has devoted a day at the UMKC School of Computing and Engineering visiting campus leadership, faculty/professors and students. Joining Dean Truman at the first UMKC event was UMKC Provost Dr. Gail Hackett. NSPE President Grossman then attended a meeting with 31 UMKC SCE faculty to discuss licensure and the need for faculty to mentor future PEs. Pizza with the President was Grossman's chance to visit with students and see Western Chapter's active SCE student chapter advised by Tom Assel. While meeting with the students, MSPE President Ben Ross, P.E. presented the society's Educational Foundation's Cohen Scholarship to Katie Horner. In the final UMKC function, President Grossman heard faculty presentations on current cutting-edge research projects and the need for continued funding that typically come from industry, state and federal government grants. He was accompanied by Vice President Britt Smith, P.E., and NSPE North Central Region Board Member Mike Meyers, P.E., and MSPE Executive Director Bruce Wylie. The full day of organized activities for President Grossman came to a close with a joint MSPE & KSPE chapter meeting in the evening at the famed Kansas City steakhouse, The Hereford House .
